We just got back from a week long "vacation" at my parents house in Miami. I have vacation in quotation marks because it really wasn't a vacation. We originally booked the trip several months ago. My little brother was graduating from high school, so our plan was to attend his graduation and then R and I were going to take a little vacation and maybe head down to the keys or some other nearby beachy location for a few days. Our plans changed when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had her schedule her mastectomy for the day after my brother's graduation so that I could be there for her. Instead of a beachy location, we spent our time in Miami in a hospital. My mom however is doing great! It doesn't look like the cancer spread to her lymph nodes (still awaiting the final path report but the prelim report was negative), so she won't have to undergo chemo! I'm so grateful for that - she was petrified of chemo. She could care less about having to have a mastectomy but really didn't want to have chemo. I brought her home the day after surgery and within 2 days she was almost back to herself - even wanting to clean the house. Her 2 sisters are also visiting from South America and she really needs to milk this and have them clean the house but that's not my mom's style. Seeing her back up and around the house (and not taking pain meds) made our departure yesterday much easier on me.
It feels so good to be home. Because my aunts were visiting, they had my old room (bigger bed) and R and I slept in my brother's room (smaller bed). His bed sucks. Not only is it small (some weird size where most full sheets are too big), but it's hard. Sleeping on our king size deluxe pillow top bed last night was so nice! R was such a trooper throughout the entire trip. For the most part, she had to hear my aunts speaking Spanish the entire week (my aunts do not shut up - and I'm one who talks a lot but OMG, my aunts were driving me nuts and I could understand what they were saying). She also sat in a hospital all day, without internet access and with a very pissy me - I was being torn in all directions - my aunts, my mom, my mom's cell phone (which did not stop ringing - I think half of Miami and all of Colombia called) and then there was R. My dad's way of dealing with things is to not deal, so he decided to work on the day of my mom's surgery. Thus R's English speaking partner wasn't there. I think R might have been the only person in the entire hospital who didn't speak Spanish.
In better news, I only threw up twice and only had 3 bouts of nausea during the entire week! My belly also grew (and not just from my dad's cooking - he's a chef, a damn good one). I had packed for Miami on Thursday night - I tried everything on before I packed it. We arrived in Miami on Saturday and half of the clothes that I had packed no longer fit. I was very amused!
I will be 16 weeks on Wednesday! OMG, that's 4 months along! I'm really starting to believe that we will be having a baby this year. Congratulations to all the recent "take home babies" - Jennifer's girls, WTF's girl and little baby Riley!

Ahhh! Good to hear from you. I was beginning to worry about you. I'm glad your mom's surgery went well and that she is doing so amazingly great. That's terrific!
Congrats on outgrowing your clothes. It's a big milestone. :)
Good grief, doc! I remember stumbling onto your blog months ago and devouring your archives and hoping so badly for this to work for you that it was borderline unhealthy, y'know? YOU OUTGREW YOUR CLOTHES! Time to hit the maternity stores. In my experience M*therhood stuff is kinda pricey but holds together better than M*mi Maternity, and P*a in a P*d is waaaay expensive but so so nice. Whoohoo! I ended up with varicosities in...places even during my first pregnancy from being on my feet a lot; you may want to consider getting some maternity support hose to wear to work. Not the most stylish or comfortable, but an ounce of prevention, etc.
Get this. The day after Riley's surgery my Mom proceeds to tell me she's been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I immediately thought of you. She's okay. It's stage one and they've removed the lump last week. But it definitely made me think of you. Glad you enjoyed your vacation. Can't wait for your next ultrasound.
i can relate to the spanish in miami. i grew up there and moved out when i was 18 but my folks are still there. when mel and i visit we feel like we've left the country, it's crazy! what part of miami are you from? i grew up in kendall, near the Falls and went to Killian. Were we neighbors?
I had a good friend (at the time) on the tennis team, she graduated a year before me in 91' and her name was Paige Y. I'm not sure if that's the same timing as when you were there but she was definitely the best tennis player that Killian had had in many years before and during her time there. I can't really speak for the talent after. Do you recognize the name? I think Miami Lakes is a good little hike from where I grew up in S. Miami. My folks and many of my friends are still there so we go down often.
